Low Carb Weight Loss Diets

Many people have effectively used low carb diets such as the Diet Solution program to lose weight for several years. There are now even scientific studies that have shown proof that these diet do in fact yield good results. In order to understand how the low carb diet can work for you, you must first understand how carbohydrates influence the body.

The body digests carbohydrates to form insulin and then eventually fat. When you consume a meal that is high in carbs, the blood sugar is immediately increased, thus stimulating the pancreas to start insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and helps cells to properly use this sugar. An over production of insulin can cause an increase in body weight, as the hormone triggers cravings for more and more carbohydrates. When you consume a low carb diet, the opposite occurs, leading to a reduction in body weight. By consuming a diet that is both low in carbs (no more than thirty grams of carbs per day), and low in calories, the body begins a new process called ketosis. Ketosis is a process that causes the body to burn fat stores as a main source of energy. Low carb diets become even more effective when daily protein intake is also increased.

The main principle of the low carb diet is to avoid processed, refined, complex, or starchy carbohydrates. A good way to know what types of foods you should stay away from is to remember if it is white, you should avoid it. White bread, white rice, potatoes, refined sugar, and pasta are all items that fall into this category. These foods tend to break down quickly and get stored in the body as fat. Carbohydrates in the form of vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, squash, asparagus, and cauliflower are allowed on a low carb diet and do not break down in the body as quickly. Adding lean sources of protein such as grilled chicken, grilled fish, lean cuts of meat, and low fat dairy products make great meals that adhere to all guidelines of the diet.

The low carb diet can be very safe, healthy, and effective when carried out properly. Not only did the recent clinical studies find the diet to be a good tool for weight loss, they also found that people who followed the program correctly had improved cholesterol levels, and lower blood pressure. Always research your diet choices thoroughly and speak with a dietician or physician prior to starting any weight loss program. You need to make sure the diet is safe for your specific health condition, and will meet all of your nutritional requirements.
